The history of Hawaiian pizza

Conventional pizza is made up of traditional, Italian ingredients. So, it comes as no surprise that its history can be traced back to Italy. Since Hawaiian pizza is topped with pineapple it would be logical to assume that its origins would be tied to Hawaii. Believe it or not, this assumption logical as it may be, could not be further from the truth.

The inventor of the pineapple pizza was Sam Panopoulos. Sam was born in Greece. He then moved to Canada when he was 20 years old. Panopoulos opened a chain of pizzerias in Ontario. In 1962 Tikis were all the rage. Panopoulos thought that putting pineapple on a pizza would be an ingenious way to attract customers. Earlier this year, Panopoulos was interviewed by the BBC. When asked why he decided to put pineapple on the pizza he said he tried out the tropical topping just for fun and to see how it would taste. It was simply an experiment. Little did he know, he had a culinary hit on his hands.

Not only is pineapple pizza a culinary classic, it has been responsible for starting a war of words between world powers. Earlier in 2017, the president of Iceland denounced pineapple as a pizza topping. In addition to starting an uproar online these comments prompted a tweet from the Canadian Prime Minister in support of pizza topped with pineapple.
