July 30, 2017 / (JoaniesToGo.com) – If you’ve ever enjoyed a late-night slice with a group of friends, someone has probably brought up the age old question of what is the difference between ham and Canadian bacon.
In this post, we are going to put your mind at ease and explain the difference between these two delicious pizza pie toppings. The technical answer is ham and Canadian Bacon are two completely different items made from completely different cuts of meat. Canadian Bacon is made from a loin of pork. Ham on the other hand, comes from specific cuts from the leg, rump and thigh of the pig.
The second question we need to tackle is: what makes Canadian bacon “Canadian”? If you order bacon in Canada, you will actually get the same delicious breakfast meet that you would be served in the United States. The term Canadian bacon has more to do with groups of British immigrants that immigrated to Canada. These immigrants had a preference for this uniquely, delicious breakfast meet. It is almost unheard for residents of Canada to use the term Canadian bacon. Most Canadians instead, use the terms “back bacon” or “peameal bacon”
But, how did the name “Canadian Bacon” come to be? In the Victorian era pork was being imported from Canada to Britain. Over time the term “Canadian Bacon” was used to differentiate this delicious meat from what we typically refer to as bacon. And, that is how Canadian bacon came to be “Canadian bacon”
So, the next time you and your pizza pals decide to get philosophical, you can drop these two pieces of culinary knowledge and make yourself look like the pizza aficionado you know you are.
